About Me

Overview

I am a first generation immigrant from Uganda and currently reside in London. I am a mother of four, home schooling at KS2 and EYFS, with the eldest at university.

My research, work and advocacy is centred around: race, racism, intersectionality, identity development, higher education, the English education system, qualitative and quantitative research and African studies.

My curiosity in education began with my eldest child’s journey through the English education system where I was baffled by the approach of both primary and secondary schools and their relationship with the local authority.

Although my masters was in Applied Project Management, I pivoted back to education for my dissertation where I interviewed 22 people that had been pupils in the English education system. Whilst on maternity leave in 2019, I expanded my masters dissertation into my first published book Black Pupils Matter: Our Experiences of the English Education System 1950s-2000.

Currently I am writing KS2, regional histories of Sub-Saharan Africa which complement my KS2, geography books of Sub-Saharan Africa in which I replace Euro-centric examples with African alternatives. These were published in 2022 and are currently available in libraries across Britain and through my website.

After graduating with a distinction, I was offered a fully paid doctoral scholarship in Education; where I explore the lived experiences of Black LGBTQ+ students in higher education institutes. This is a comparative study encompassing the UK, U.S. and South Africa. I employ a mixed-methods approach using questionnaires, interviews and focus group.

On my doctoral journey, I have had my fair share of rejection from educational and related journals and struggled to find peer-reviewed and academic journals, articles or papers covering Black sexual and gender studies, therefore in 2022 I founded the Global Journal of Black Sexuality and Gender Studies.

During my doctoral research focus group sessions it became clear that there was a need for a platform to provide an opportunity for Black LGBTQ+ individuals to share their lived experiences and provide a safe space to learn from each other which led to the establishment of the Global BLGBTQ+ Chat. This is a collaborative project of which I am a co-founder. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month and have contributors from South Africa, UK, U.S. and the rest of the world.
